It’s no secret that everyone needs support when going through difficult times or implementing new changes and your fitness journey is no different. It is VITAL that you have a support network who can help you both emotionally and physically to achieve your health and fitness goals.

What is a support network?

A support network is the people in your life, friends, family, your trainer, etc who are there to help and to support you in achieving your goals. While one individual may provide excellent emotional support, they may not be the best person when it comes to offering physical support. However, luckily you might have another person in your life who can provide that physical support.

This is the benefit of having a network, rather than a single individual to depend upon. You are able to harness all their combined strengths and support to shoot for the moon and achieve your goals.

Types of Support

The types of support people are most familiar with are emotional and physical, however there is a third type that is especially important when it comes to any lifestyle change, and that is inspiring support.

Someone who provides inspiring support, uplifts you and motivates you. They remind you why you started this journey in the first place. Every time you are around them, it feels as though you could conquer the world and make it back in time for dinner. They energise you and above all inspire you to be the best version of yourself!

Emotional Support – Listens to you and helps you work through difficult feelings

  • Eg. Helping you calm down and rationalise difficult situations

Physical Support – Minimises practical obstacles blocking you from achieving your goals

  • Eg. Watching the kids so you can attend a fitness class

Inspiring Support – Encourages you to keep going and remember why you started in the first place

  • Eg. Pulling you out of bed to train when the bed seems just too comfy

How To Ask For Support

It can be daunting to admit we need help, we may feel guilty or silly, but the important thing to remember is that everyone – and I mean everyone needs support from time to time. A health and fitness journey has many challenges and obstacles along the way; managing a diet, committing to exercise sessions, moving away from familiar, but toxic habits etc.

Let your support network know what you are doing, what your goals are, and what obstacles you might encounter and how they can help you overcome them!

Let them know you appreciate them, and that this journey may be an opportunity to strengthen your relationship.

However, it isn’t uncommon for you to receive unsupportive behaviours from those around you. Some of your family and/or friends may display jealousy, become offensive, or are irritated by your desire for change. Most of these feelings don’t come from a malicious place but are more likely to be a reaction to your new outlook and the steps we are taking to become healthier and happier. Over time the people who truly support you will realise how beneficial these changes can be.

Who Can I Get Support From?

There are a variety of people in our lives who can support us through this fitness journey. You likely already had someone in mind as soon as you began reading. Here’s a list of some typical people who will become part of your support network.

  • Family
